What to Handle Before July: Exterior Fixes for Cape Cod Homes

Spring moves fast on the Cape, and before you know it, July is here. April is the sweet spot for catching up on exterior maintenance so your home is ready for summer weather, guests, and rentals.

Start with the basics: roof, gutters, and drainage. Winter storms can loosen shingles and clog gutters with leaves and debris. A quick inspection from the ground and a professional look if anything seems off help prevent leaks during heavy spring rains. At the same time, check that downspouts are directing water away from your foundation and that low spots in the yard aren’t collecting standing water.

Next, walk your siding and trim. Look for peeling paint, soft or discolored boards, and gaps around windows and doors. Coastal conditions are tough on wood and finishes, and small areas of rot can spread quickly if ignored. Addressing exterior trim and rot repair now keeps moisture out and protects the bigger investments you’ve made in your home.

Driveways and walkways deserve attention, too. Freeze–thaw cycles can create cracks, low spots, and trip hazards. Whether your driveway is asphalt, concrete, pavers, stone, or even shells, spring is a good time to evaluate drainage, patch problem areas, and consider upgrades that improve curb appeal and function.

By tackling these “before July” tasks in April, you set your home up for a smoother, more enjoyable summer so you can focus on enjoying your deck, patio, or beach days instead of chasing repairs.
